Cv Shaft Noise When Turning

I replaced the the front cv axles on my 03 legacy friday night, saturday i was driving around and noticed a weird grinding/humming noise when at speeds around 50mph on the driver side. A bad or failing cv joint will oftentimes make a clicking, popping or grinding noise, especially when turning. If the noise gets louder and more consistent, the user can safely assume that the cv joints have become compromised. I pulled the wheel off and put the car in drive and listen for the noise.

It is still running great (after driving all the way home) but, i noticed it is making a loud clunking, metal on metal kind of noise on the front left axle when in first gear, happens more when turning (i think right, but maybe both right and left). My car is sounding like a cv joint going out by the thunking noise when turning. Now the noise is gone!!

It presents itself when you turn the vehicle, and it's due to the loose joints of a worn cv axle. You may still be able to turn the wheels just fine, but these noises could be an early warning sign that something is wrong. The noise is either coming from the cv axle or the wheel bearing.

Symptoms of a bad cv axle shaft. The problem is definitely with the cv joints, bearings, or differentials if a steering steel makes noise when turning at high speeds. It is usually worst when going around 25 mph but starts as soon as the wheels start turning and continues clicking all the way up to 60 mph but the faster i go the quieter it gets.

This is most often heard during sharp turns at lower speeds. One of the most common and most noticeable symptoms of a bad or failing cv axle shaft assembly is an audible clicking noise when turning. This sounds like a wheel bearing.

This can be due to inadequate lubrication in either the inner or outer cv joint caused by a damaged or split boot.

Cv axle boot on that side is torn and leaking, just started not a lot of grease all. Here is how to check. Inner cv joints failures are rare.

The cv joints at the front wheels feature a spherical housing, which allows for up to 45 degrees turning, while those at the differentials and rear wheels are planar, allowing for only a small angular variation and a few millimeters extension or retraction. I have read some threads here and some folks point to cv joints, others to wheel bearing hubs. One day you will go to make a turn around a corner and then you’ll experience sudden binding in the steering wheel as you’re turning it.

However, this symptom is more often due to worn or damaged wheel bearings, a bad intermediate shaft bearing on equal length halfshaft transaxles, or worn shaft bearings within the transaxle. It only takes a few grains of sand or dust to get inside the cv joint to cause wear and eventually failure. The cv joint allows flexibility at each end of the axle shaft as the vehicle is going down the road.

2 months ago the noise was faint, but noticeable. You can drive on a damaged cv joint for a little while, but there’s no telling how long “safe” operation will last. If you listen closely, you may be able to tell which side it's coming from.

When taking the car in for a cv axle replacement repair you can expect to pay between $225.00 and $320.00 (us) depending on manufacturer. It could be a cv joint problem, but the clicking is quite different than the one i can find on youtube.
